Mission Trace Pond & Waterfowl Committee:
Working to restore our community's most valued asset!
Nestled in the heart of Mission Trace, our beloved pond symbolizes serenity and community pride. However, environmental challenges and climate change threaten its sustainability. Rising temperatures and droughts endanger the ecosystem, making action crucial. In response, the Mission Trace Pond and Waterfowl Committee (PWC) was formed to rejuvenate, protect, and secure the pond’s future.
Thanks to an anonymous donor and strong community support, we are implementing sustainable solutions to restore and protect Mission Trace Pond. Through strategic planning, eco-conscious restoration, and water conservation, we aim to create a thriving, self-sustaining ecosystem that enhances property values, preserves wildlife, and offers a serene retreat. Together, we can secure the future of this cherished natural asset.
The 55.277-acre Mission Trace Planned Unit Development (PUD), proposed by Developer Jack Devore, Trustee, was approved by the City of San Antonio on May 9, 1973.
The pond was originally created to capture stormwater runoff, helping to manage drainage while also enhancing the natural beauty and aesthetic appeal of the neighborhood.
An 18-inch-thick clay liner was installed to help retain water, minimize seepage, and support the pond’s long-term stability.
A fountain was installed to enhance water circulation, improve oxygen levels, and add to the pond’s aesthetic appeal. It operates in two four-hour intervals each day, following guidelines and authorization from SAWS to ensure compliance with water conservation regulations.
The National Wildlife Federation designated the pond as a Certified Wildlife Habitat which recognizes properties that provide essential resources for wildlife—food, water, shelter, and safe breeding spaces—while promoting sustainable land management. Maintaining these elements ensures ongoing certification and supports local biodiversity.
The Mission Trace Pond & Waterfowl Fund and Committee were established to support the preservation, restoration, and ongoing maintenance of the pond and its surrounding ecosystem. Through community involvement and dedicated efforts, the fund and committee work to enhance water quality, protect wildlife, and ensure the long-term sustainability of this vital neighborhood resource.
